Other than the rumored iMac Pro, we're expecting an array of exciting announcements from Apple in 2022, from the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple Watch Series 8, a redesigned MacBook Air, a cheaper MacBook Pro model and more. However, given his proven track record and his insight in the display industry, there's a good chance that his words carry some weight. All the iMacs models that can work in what Apple called Target Display Mode as a secondary display for a modern Mac require an adapter to connect a Thunderbolt 3 port on the iMac to a Mini. After all, we won't know anything for sure until we get a confirmation from Apple. Nevertheless, it's too early to say if Young's statements are indeed true.

In a recent Power-On newsletter, Gurman shared that Apple's rumored Spring event could feature "at least one Mac" announcement, though it's unclear whether it will be the iMac Pro or the refreshed Mac mini. Meanwhile, another reputable Apple tipster Mark Gurman claimed that the new iMac Pro could pack a "similar" chip instead, which could be a fourth M1 chip. Step 3 Plug the cable into the Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort on MacBook or PC. Step 2 Make sure the MacBook is logged in to the user account. Other rumors suggest that the iMac Pro could sport the same M1 Pro and M1 Max chips seen in the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Step 1 Turn on both source MacBook/PC and iMac. But otherwise, maybe wait to see what Apple comes out with this year and get something more powerful.According to Young's previous predictions, the 27-inch machine is reportedly expected to be a higher-end version of the 24-inch iMac 2021 and feature a 120Hz variable refresh rate.

If this isn’ really professional work, then that’s fine I guess. Either way it sounds like you are trying to use a budget machine to do professional work. If you are editing 4K videos in an app like DaVinci Resolve (I don’t use it myself) then you may want to consider something more powerful than a small iMac (with no GPU, I assume) or a Mac mini.

Plus you can probably get way more than $300 selling your old iMac.Īnother thing I feel I need to mention. I would like to use the iMac 21.5 2017 Retina as my working monitor for the Mac Mini M1. I want to speed the process and thought about getting an a Mac Mini M1. And a screen like that will use a lot less power than your old iMac would anyway. The iMac slows down and it lags when I try to edit large 4K videos. You can get a 4K HiDPI (retina) screen for about $300. That was a feature available in much older iMacs, but not more recent ones. You cannot use that model of iMac as a screen. So there’s nothing wrong with it working that way, but I can understand you’d want a new machine if you want to maximize your time and effort. It wouldn’t be unusual for your Mac to slow down if you are pushing it to its limits by editing 4K videos.
On the other hand, the iMac looks like a monitor, except that all the hardware is integrated into the bottom chin. It looks like a bigger Apple TV at first glance, but to fit an entire computer into a device that small is seriously impressive.
You should now be viewing the screen from the other Mac on the display of the iMac. Apples Mac mini is the smallest Mac you can buy. When you ask computer to do more work, it will take longer. Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac (the computer being used as the display) to enable Target Display Mode.
